Box and material estimate
Calculate cartons and packing material
Use this before a survey so you can question unclear lines like packing included.
Cartons needed for 1, 2, 3 and 4 BHK shifting
Use this as a starting table before the calculator. A home with many books, crockery, decor or balcony storage can need more boxes than the BHK label suggests.
| Home size | Cartons | Bubble wrap | Tape | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 BHK | 12 to 30 | 15 to 25 m | 3 to 4 rolls | Small flat, rented setup, limited kitchen |
| 2 BHK | 25 to 42 | 30 to 45 m | 5 to 6 rolls | Normal family home with kitchen and appliances |
| 3 BHK | 42 to 65 | 45 to 65 m | 7 to 8 rolls | Larger home with more furniture and fragile goods |
| 4 BHK or villa | 65+ | 70 m+ | 10+ rolls | Survey-led move with premium packing and storage |
Which packing material does what?
The right count is not only about number of boxes. Size and use matter because one wrong jumbo carton full of books can break before it reaches the truck.
Small cartons
Books, crockery, files, tools and heavy small items
Do not overload. Heavy cartons tear during loading.
Medium cartons
Kitchen goods, clothes, decor and normal loose items
Best all-round size for Indian house shifting.
Jumbo cartons
Bedding, pillows, soft toys and light bulky goods
Avoid books or utensils in jumbo boxes.
Bubble wrap and foam
TV, glass, crockery, decor, electronics and appliance surfaces
Fragile items need item-wise packing, not one thin layer.
Stretch film and tape
Furniture surface, cartons, appliance wrap and bundle control
Cheap tape opens in heat or during long handling.
How to use this with a mover quote
Send the mover your room photos, kitchen shelves, wardrobes, balcony storage, books and fragile items before accepting the packing line. If the quote only says packing included, ask for carton count and fragile packing scope.
For a 2 BHK, there is a big difference between 25 mixed cartons and 40 cartons with kitchen, glass, books and appliances. The first quote may look cheaper only because the material line is thin.
Where this tool stops
This calculator does not price cartons or bubble wrap. It only estimates quantity. For price, read packing material charges. For total moving cost, use the moving cost calculator.
Why carton count affects truck size
More cartons do not only add material cost. They also add loading time and vehicle volume. If your estimate crosses the normal count for your BHK, check the truck size calculator before accepting a small-vehicle quote.
Worked example: normal 2 BHK packing list
Take a 2 BHK with two beds, sofa, dining table, fridge, washing machine, TV, kitchen goods, clothes, one work desk, books and balcony items. The material count should be discussed before the crew arrives, because extra cartons on packing day are a common reason the bill changes.
| Material | Planning count | Where it goes | Quote question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small cartons | 8 to 12 | Books, crockery, files, heavy small items | Are heavy cartons double taped? |
| Medium cartons | 14 to 20 | Kitchen, decor, regular household goods | Are extra cartons charged separately? |
| Jumbo cartons | 5 to 8 | Bedding, pillows and light soft goods | Will heavy items be kept out? |
| Bubble wrap | 30 to 45 m | TV, glass, crockery, appliance edges | Which fragile items are listed? |
How box count affects quote comparison
Two movers can quote the same 2 BHK very differently if one counted kitchen, books and balcony storage and the other guessed from room size. Keep carton count visible when you compare.
Questions to ask before packing starts
These questions keep packing material from becoming a move-day argument. Send them on WhatsApp before the supervisor opens cartons.
Carton count
How many small, medium and jumbo cartons are included? What happens if the count increases?
Fragile packing
Which exact items get bubble wrap, foam, hard sheet, corner guard or crate work?
Owner-packed boxes
Will the mover accept responsibility for boxes packed by you, or are those carried at owner risk?
Labels and inventory
Will cartons be labelled by room and counted before loading? This matters for missing-items checks later.
If you are worried about loss or damage, read the damage claim process and missing items after delivery guides before signing the final delivery sheet.
Common packing count mistakes
Most carton disputes start from missed small goods, not from the bed or sofa. Before accepting a quote, open the loft, balcony, kitchen storage and shoe racks. These corners quietly add boxes. Take photos before the survey so the mover cannot say later that the extra goods were never shown.
Books in large cartons
Books should go in small cartons. A jumbo carton full of books becomes too heavy and can tear during loading.
Kitchen counted late
Kitchen goods need more small cartons than people expect, especially crockery, steel utensils, mixer jars and glass containers.
For office files, keep boxes smaller and label them by department. A heavy file carton is slower to lift and easier to misplace at delivery.

Packing box calculator FAQ
How many cartons are needed for 2 BHK shifting?
A normal 2 BHK often needs about 25 to 42 cartons depending on people, kitchen goods, clothes, books, balcony storage and fragile items.
How many boxes are needed for 1 BHK shifting?
A light 1 BHK may need 12 to 18 cartons, while a fuller 1 BHK can need 20 to 30 cartons once kitchen, clothes, books and appliances are included.
Should I use small or large cartons for shifting?
Use small cartons for books, crockery and heavy items. Use medium cartons for regular goods and jumbo cartons only for light bedding, soft items and toys.
Does this calculator show packing material charges?
No. Use it for quantity. For price, read the packing material charges page because fresh cartons, bubble wrap, crate work and fragile packing are billed differently.
Can I buy cartons myself before movers arrive?
Yes, for clothes and simple goods. Let the mover handle fragile, TV, glass, appliance and high-value packing if you want cleaner responsibility in the quote.
Why do movers ask for more cartons on moving day?
It usually happens when loft, balcony, kitchen, books or storage goods were not shown during the quote. Share photos before booking to reduce surprise cartons.
